Upset The Rhythm

I normally don't write reviews, but I felt quite inspired by this gig and had some ideas I wanted to put on paper, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Last Saturday, on the 22nd of May, I saw Parenthetical Girls and Former Ghosts (supported by Ghost Bees), at the Luminaire.

Former Ghosts
Former Ghosts is a project by Freddy Ruppert (of This Song Is A Mess But So Am I fame), who released the brilliant album ‘Fleurs’ last year. On the album Freddy worked together with some impressive names: Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart and Zola Jesus’ Nika Roza. What does it sound like? Well, Pitchfork described it as “sounds like what might've happened to Joy Division if Ian Curtis had bought a Casio and a four-track and fired the rest of the band.”, which is a fair enough description if you ask me. ‘Fleurs’ is an incredibly emotional and intense, almost brutal, synthpop/electro album, it’s very dark and gloomy. And I love it.
On stage Ruppert is joined by Jehrek Bisschof from Parenthetical Girls on guitar for the first few songs, than he is left to finish the job on his own. Obviously Nika Roza and Jamie Stewart have obligations to their own bands, but I only consciously realized this at the gig itself. Consequently, Ruppert wouldn’t be playing the songs featuring Nika Roza on vocals, such as ‘The Bull and the Ram’, also resulting in the set being quite short.
None the less, the intensity and emotions are even more effective live than on record; Ruppert screams, dances and sweats all the emotions out of his body, as if he were possessed by demons (and who is to say he isn’t?) and that this is the way he gets rid of them.
After the first song he’s already panting like an astma patient who just completed a marathon and during the rest of the songs this only gets worse (that excessive tapdancing and headbanging, probably didn’t really help). He did mention he had been in hospital recently.... However, the psychical pain Ruppert seems to be suffering on stage goes hand in hand with the emotional pain expressed in his songs; it’s almost like the mental pain is being projected through actual pain.
Whether it was genuine or just my imagination, I couldn’t really say, but if it wasn’t real, Ruppert would definitely deserve an Oscar, because that would have been the best acting I’ve ever seen in my life....

My first film with my Kodak Advantix. Not overwelmed by the result, but it's not bad.
